10 Favorite Eateries: South Austin

Whether you've crossed over Lady Bird Lake to go swimming at Barton Springs Pool, to explore South Congress, or to take in the sights at The Cathedral of Junk, you'll be glad to know that the Southside is serving up tasty bites at every corner. Here's a few of our favorite Food Trucks, Taco Joints, and Restaurants (in no particular order) for you to feast your eyes (ahem, stomachs) on.

Stick to the traditional sushi for the best experience and let your server choose a couple dishes for you if your daring enough. Odd Duck

Odd Duck creators describe their restaurant as "shaped by our craftsmen's approach to cooking, the culture of our city, the creativity of our staff and the products from our amazing farmers." These (local!) farm-to-table meals will make your mouth water as soon as they're delivered by your server. Try one of the cocktails on special, too - crafted to perfection.  |  1201 S Lamar Blvd, 78704

This sweet French Bistro seats few (make reservations!) but the French-country décor and the delectable cuisine, made up of a 3-course meal at a very affordable $45, make for an unforgettable night. And if you don't quite have the $45 in your dining out budget check out the wine garden in Lenoir's backyard for a simple, appetizers-and-wine-filled evening.  |  1807 S 1st St, 78704

Hey You Gonna Eat Or What.png

You Gonna Eat Or What?

Austinites and visitors alike love the famous Shiner Bock beer-battered Monte Cristo sandwich with homemade Cherry/Fig Jelly and fresh-cut potato chips. This sandwich (and all sandwiches at this popular Food Truck stop) will make your tastebuds think they've exploded. Come with an empty stomach - it'll fill you up for hours. Don't be offended if the owner insults you: it's part of his fun-loving shtick!  |  1720 Barton Springs Rd, 78704

Mellizoz Tacos.jpg

Mellizoz Tacos

In the heart of South 1st since 2008, Mellizoz Tacos brings "family tradition and delicious food made with fresh ingredients." Everything is cooked fresh and served with homemade salsa. Plus, their entire menu is available all day. Try a taco, torta, the freshly made-to-order guac, or garlic fries. Fill up on tacos or save a bit of room to split a Gordough's Donut (found next door) with a friend.  |  1503 S 1st St, 78704

This might just be the sweetest coffee-joint South of Ladybird Lake. The café has a Danish-designed flair, locally sourced coffee & espresso, plus baked goods. If you're looking for a little something extra for your rumbling stomach, Patika's food truck outside serves up gourmet breakfast toasts, breakfast sandwiches, quiches, and more.  |  2159 S Lamar Blvd, 78704

Home Slice

New York style Pizza -- so be prepared to fold your slice in half New-Yorker style. Home Slice is the Locals' favorite.
